What To Do After a Car Accident

A simple, step-by-step guide to help you stay safe and organized.

Step 1 of 8

Stay Calm & Get Safe

Take a Deep Breath

Staying calm helps you think clearly and respond effectively in the moments that matter most.

Move Out of Traffic

If it is safe to do so, move your vehicle to the side of the road or a nearby parking area.

Turn On Hazard Lights

Stay visible to other drivers by activating your hazard lights immediately.

Reach a Safe Location

Move yourself and passengers away from the road and out of harm’s way.

Step 2 of 8

Check for Injuries

Before anything else, take a moment to check on everyone involved.

  • Check yourself and all passengers for injuries before doing anything else
  • Do not move anyone who may have a neck or back injury, wait for emergency responders
  • Even if injuries seem minor, seek medical attention promptly, some symptoms appear later.

When in doubt, call 911. Your safety always comes first.

Step 3 of 8

Call 911 / Police If Needed

Call 911

Always call 911 if there are injuries, blocked traffic, or unsafe conditions at the scene. Especially when the other party is at fault.

Request a Police Report

A police report creates an official record of the incident, an important document for any follow-up.

Note Officer Details

Write down the responding officer’s name and badge number for your records.

Step 4 of 8

Exchange Information

Gathering the right details at the scene makes everything easier later. Here’s what to collect:

Other Driver

Full name, phone number, and home address

Insurance Details

Company name, policy number, and agent contact information

Vehicle Info

Make, model, year, license plate number, and VIN

Witnesses

Names and contact information of any witnesses, if available

Step 5 of 8

Take Photos, Videos & Notes

Documentation is one of the most valuable things you can do at the scene. The more detail, the better.

  • Photograph all vehicles, visible damage, license plates, and the overall scene
  • Capture road conditions, traffic signs, signals, and any skid marks
  • Write down the time, date, location, and weather conditions
  • Note what happened while the details are still fresh in your memory

Step 6 of 8

Do Not Admit Fault

Watch Your Words

Avoid saying “I’m sorry” or accepting blame at the scene, even casually. These statements can be misinterpreted later.

Stick to the Facts

Describe only what happened factually. Let trained investigators determine the full picture of what occurred.

Keep It Neutral

Do not discuss fault, liability, or coverage with the other party at the scene.

Step 7 of 8

Contact Your Carrier or Agent

Reach out to your insurance carrier or agent as soon as possible after the accident.

  • Notify them promptly — timely reporting is important
  • Provide the facts: date, location, parties involved, and your photos
  • Ask about next steps — your agent is there to guide you through the process

You don’t have to navigate this alone. Your agent is your advocate.

Step 8 of 8

Keep Records

Save All Documents

Keep your police report, repair estimates, and any medical bills in one safe place.

Log Every Communication

Keep a running log of every communication — the date and time, who you spoke with, and what was discussed.
